The demons have killed Thîkut the mechanic and Kivish the marksdwarf. Half a dozen war dogs have died as well. The soldiers are in the depths, guarding the stairway leading up to the inhabited areas, and they are not happy at all.

We've located the other three fire demons! They've climbed a long-forgotten secondary stairway leading all the way up to our original farm area; Arnok only knows why. Perhaps they're hoping to sneak through the farm access tunnel and reach the residential area. Well, we'll wall it off and tear down the old stairs! They'll be trapped!

Those hellborn bastards! They've melted the doors to the old graveyard, and they're smashing the coffins and scattering the bones of our dead! They shall pay dearly for this desecration.

The masons have done the trick! The secondary stairs are smashed, the farm access tunnel is blocked, and the chamber leading to hell is sealed. The three remaining demons are trapped!

...unless they can fly. Can they fly? It looked like maybe they had fiery wings but we're not sure. We'd better station some axedwarves near the old farm skylights just in case.

Morale is getting shaky. The marksdwarves are, understandably, incredibly upset due to the battle with fiery abominations, close-quarters combat in smoky tunnels, and the loss of their leader Iden. The general populace is on edge and depressed from all the death and destruction--especially after Kivish died screaming and on fire in the middle of the residential main hallway. We've relieved the marksdwarves from duty for now to give them some time to calm down, but a few of them have been throwing tantrums, tearing doors off their hinges, and picking fights. Mayor Tun has declared himself Captain of the Guard and vowed to punish any disorderly conduct with a month's imprisonment (and a merciful thing, too; Sir Mafol the Hammerer is of the opinion that bashing their heads in would be a more effective solution).

Well, we have a definitive answer for demon flight. The fire demon Kìrar has leapt out of the cave through the farming skylight and into the world above. Our axedwarves chopped it to pieces, but not before it set three of them--and the jungle!--on fire. Momuz, Zulban, and Nil, axedwarves, are no more.

Mayor Tun has decided to step down as Captain of the Guard. Two minor criminals (Dumed the marksdwarf and Ast the farmer, who picked fights with others out of frustration) died of their wounds after Tun administered a bit of justice to them with his fists. Tun, visibly depressed, muttered something about not knowing his own strength, and appointed Bim the peasant (who is less mighty and thus less dangerous) as the new Captain of the Guard. Tun will be pleased to return to his former mayorial duties of record-keeping, farming, labor organization, and consoling unhappy dwarves... as soon as he gets out of prison in 200 days.

The jungle fire is mostly contained. It doesn't seem to be crossing the brook, and it's surrounded on all other sides by bare rocky mountain terrain, so once it runs through all the nearby lumber and grass it'll just burn itself out. Also, the miners are digging a secondary tunnel to try to get at the adamantine from a different direction that doesn't go through the hellpit. We'll need something of its strength to deal effectively with the demons!

The marksdwarves managed to pick off Ome, one of the two remaining fire demons through the farm skylight! Just one left... that we can see. There may be others still hiding in the hellpit. Unfortunately the stress of combat was too much for Lorbam, who went berserk and started attacking his fellow marksdwarves. The others in his squadron quickly shot him down, but in the struggle Dodók fell down the skylight, within sight of Oyéle, the last fire demon! The hellspawn lunged towards Dodók, but then leapt out of the pit to attack the other marksdwarves that were shooting at it.

Oyéle is slain. As far as we can tell there are no more fire demons outside of the hellpit that spawned them. But we've only accounted for four... weren't there five to begin with? Ah well, perhaps we miscounted.

Besmar the marksdwarf's son Melbil has also snapped from the stress. His father Vucar was killed by the demons and he just couldn't take it anymore. Melbil started attacking others indiscriminately in the food storage room until another marksdwarf stationed nearby shot him down. Poor kid. Besmar was of course quite distraught at the news; she knocked over a couple of tables in the dining room and is still feeling miserable.

In any event, now that the danger is past, we can work towards rebuilding our fortress, both physically and socially. Of the 192 dwarves living in our fortress just before we unleashed the demons, 168 remain. The masons will be busy making coffins for quite some time, and we will need to build up a sizable military force before we try opening the hell chamber again. Overall most of the populace seems to have calmed down, except for the marksdwarves, many of whom are still miserable from their harrowing experiences, some of the farmers, and the children who have lost parents in the attack from below. Perhaps spending a few days relaxing in the dining room and watching the waterfall will help calm their nerves. All told, we should consider ourselves fortunate just to be alive today.
