After class today I was walking back to my car downtown when it started raining, so I ducked into Wok 'N Roll to have some potstickers mmm yummy potstickers and get started on my algebra homework. The TV in the restaurant was tuned to Jeapordy so I watched that between problems. I was quite surprised to find that one of the categories was "The Onion." Yep, all the questions were about headlines from The Onion's book Our Dumb Century. I had forgotten a couple of the names, but I certainly recognized all of the headlines cited. Another of the categories was Egyptian mythology, and one of the questions was about the god of the dead, and the contestants--and these are long-standing Jeapordy champions here, not just new challengers--didn't recognize him as Osiris, even though Trebeck showed a picture of him. One of the contestants even guessed Thoth, despite the fact that the god pictured clearly did not have an ibis head. Jeez.

So I drove home and talked with Yev about the Automat from Dark City and the new uber-vending-machine "Shop 2000," and then we found out that there really WAS a chain of Automat restaurants in New York in the early 1900s, and they weren't dark and eerie like the one in Dark City but were instead upbeat and art-deco and friendly and AWESOME and it really sucks that the parent company closed them all down and turned them into Burger Kings. Meh. I want to go to an Automat now.

Also I finished my algebra homework. Y'all can be proud of me now 'cos I'm actually finishing my homework the night before it's due instead of just rushing through a few problems the hour before it's due.

So I finished my algebra homework, went to sleep, woke up, had breakfast, wrote up a lesson plan, photocopied some worksheets, arrived at the school in Cowtown 15 minutes before class started, and taught about the algebraic order of operations. It went well; much better than usual. Went back to campus, turned in algebra homework, helped out lots of undergrads in the calculus room (must be midterm season again), came home, filled out online FAFSA renewal form.

Y'know, I really like being early and prepared. I should do this more often.

...I just wish I'd figured that out five years ago...

I don't get it. How can any modern intelligent adult still believe in astrology? Am I missing something here?
