Meanwhile, back on Earth...

I've started my new teaching job at the community college! Today was lots of fun; I got to see a lot of my old students again, and, on the first day of their pre-calculus class, had them doing, enjoying, and even understanding basic calculus, without even knowing that it was calculus.
The classes are absolutely enormous. They have 35 and 40 students enrolled, respectively, but each also has about a 23 student waitlist, all of whom showed up to class hoping to get add slips. I hate to do it but I think I'm going to have to turn many of them down. I was surprised to discover that each of the two classes includes one student from my classes at the Evil High School of Evil Doom three years ago in Heckfield. (I apologized to them for what was my worst year of teaching and assured them that this year would be vastly superior.)
Yesterday I asked the community college math department coordinator what to do about some of the enrollment issues and he said "You're the king of your classroom. It's up to you." Many people have said this to me before but I think this is the first time anyone actually meant it.
The bumperstickermobile is ready for its 160,000 mile tune-up. I'm bringing my bike to school in a couple of days so one of my fellow teachers can look it over and patch it up after three years of sitting on the back porch with a flat tire.
Grandmother's in the hospital with a badly broken pelvis from a simple fall. Brittle bones. Doesn't look good.
And it looks like I may be heading down to Casa de Fruta faire site this Saturday to meet a music coordinator and pretend that I can play shawm and/or sackbut, neither of which I've ever even touched before. Any suggestions? ;-) Also, who else is going to be there on Saturday? Anyone want to meet up?
