A legendary mask, the Baron arrives, the goblins fail at attacking, the Baron departs, a better new farm, axedwarves-in-training, and... legendary dwarven boxer shorts?

Spring 1060

The statues are in place and the floodgates have been opened. The mist and spray playing over the statue brings great beauty to the common dining room--dinner and a show! Once the water level underneath is high enough, we'll have a working indoor well too.

The elven caravan is back. We'll re-activate the marksdwarves to escort them in. Fortunately they're already pretty close to our entrance gate.

Just as we were about to start our ash-to-potash-to-pearlash-to-glass industry, Èrith the potash maker went into a fey mood, and claimed a craftsdwarf's workshop. What sort of legendary artifact is a potash maker supposed to make? Legendary potash? So far she's picked up a turtle shell and a cave lobster shell, as well as some trifle pewter and emeralds. Now she's screaming about logs, bones, leather, metal, and MORE shells. Wood seems to be the bottleneck here; we're all out at the moment. Time for our sole surviving woodcutter to earn her keep. Or maybe we could buy some from the elven merchants, if Mayor Tun would stop eating and drinking and planting seeds at the farm and get back to the main gate and trade... Ah, here he is now. Well, it looks like all the elves have to offer this time is wood and cloth, but wood's just what we need right now, and they have plenty of it. We took it all, and gave them in exchange 30 times its worth in useless (to us) goblin equipment. A fair deal leaving everyone happy.

Ah, and speaking of happy, it looks like Èrith has already noticed the huge pile of lumber, and is running out to get some. She's now got the craft shop filled to the brim with cave lobster shell, turtle shell, trifle pewter, emeralds, willow wood, fishbones, and cow leather. We don't know what she's making but it'll probably menace with spikes of shell.

A mask! She's made a legendary mask. Strange; masks aren't something often made by dwarves. It's made of lobster shell and decorated with... well, with all the other stuff. It has pewter spikes and a depiction of Dostngosp Slaxuongas the goblin spearmaster surrounded by dwarves. And cheese. A picture of cheese, that is. Well, she likes cheese, she says. Strange, but well-made and valuable. And now she's a legendary bone carver! That should be quite useful for making bolts of all the goblinbone lying around.

A new wave of immigrants have arrived, brave souls, despite the frequent goblin attacks. With them comes a replacement dungeon master, Lord Likot Anûznish... AND BARON TUN OLONMENG FROM THE MOUNTAINHOMES! Apparently Queen Edëm Lorbamnol has seen fit to charter Leromrigòth as a barony!

Baron Tun brings with him his consort Baroness Zas Olonâbir, tax collector Lady Sibrek Zanordodók, and hammerer Sir Mafol Ingulèzum. We'll be hard at work over the next few months carving out bedrooms and offices for them all; it's a good thing the stockpiles are almost completely inside and in order.

The rest of the immigrants:
• Mr. Åblel Athelokol, carpenter
• Mr. Besmar Urvadkogan, stoneworker
...and his dogs Mistêm Savotlitast and Datan Fatherar
• Mr. Mafol Fathudist, engraver
• Ms. Led Lorbamnïng, ranger
• Mr. Monom Solonróth, animal caretaker
• Mrs. Monom Therlethèrith, metalsmith and wife of Nil Bomreklokum
• Mr. Nil Bomreklokum, peasant and husband of Monom Therlethèrith
...and his puppy Led Olinudos and horse foal Tun Irathel
• Ms. Udil Atírnicat, armorer
...and her puppy Dastot Rakusttirist
• Mr. Iden Lîilaroltar, metalcrafter
...and his donkeys Thob Ostbomrek and Èzum Alåthdurad
• Mr. Ilral Astmeng, gem setter
...and his horse Kivish Oddomadil
• Mr. Zas Olonanam, leatherworker
• Ms. Lòr Veshinod, bone carver
• Mrs. Kadol Fathnåzom, fish cleaner and wife of Zulban Lokumudil
• Mr. Zulban Lokumudil, peasant and husband of Kadol Fathnåzom
• Ms. Sodel Geshudbim, cook
• Mr. Thob Lîlarbesmar, siege engineer
• Ms. Thob Dîbeshrith, siege operator
• Mr. Lokum Ducimetur, peasant
...and his donkey Ducim Koles
• Ms. Rigòth Olonkurik, peasant
• Ms. Momuz Ilralônam, peasant

Well, the peasants are going to start training in martial arts and axedwarfship. We need a stronger military; that much seems clear, and it would be nice if we had an axedwarf skilled enough to use Flamecrabs the Flighty Target, our legendary golden axe.

We just completed one of our biggest recent accomplishments: bringing the last of the massive food stockpile inside! Now all of our stockpiles are deep underground and safe, with the exception of the cage stockpile and the bones stockpile. To celebrate we're all eating and drinking from the new larder, right across the hallway from the amazingly wondrous dining room. Also, Iden the weaponsmith has given birth to a baby girl named Athel Fikodozsit.

Summer 1060

The miners and engravers have been working full-time on carving out tombs in the depths for the nobles and low-cost housing for some of the new immigrants. (With the transition to a Barony comes the beginning of our economy--each dwarf has an account with the hoardmaster's office, and buys goods and rents a room with the credits he or she earns for labor.)

Ah, the human caravan has returned! The guild representative will be eager to meet our new baron. They're a bit too early to use our as-yet-unfinished new indoor trade depot, but the old outside one is still up.

Besmar the marksdwarf has had another son, Melbil Kolkôn.

Once Mayor Tun woke up and arrived at the trade depot, we gave the humans a huge pile of goblin equipment in exchange for all the wood, metal, food, and drink they had with them, as well as a few cages and barrels. Our farmers had been so busy planting and harvesting that they hadn't had time for brewing, and we were running dangerously low on booze (less than a month's supply!), but now we have enough for a season or two, and plenty of brewable fruit and grain.

After much deliberation we have decided that execution is the only pragmatic solution for the problem of our four goblin prisoners. Even in the cages they're too much of a liability and releasing them would be just as dangerous. We have set our new squadron of axedwarves to do the job as quickly and dwarvenly as possible.

Alåth the woodcutter has gone into a fey mood and claimed a carpentry shop. This should be interesting. She's pulled in mahogany, turtleshell, microcline, mountain goat leather, and gold.

Autumn 1060

Alåth has made a legendary animal trap. It's made of mahogany and decorated with bands and spikes of everything else, and has, once again, a picture on it (in leather) of Flamecrabs the Flighty Target the golden battle axe. Not sure exactly what we're going to do with a legendary animal trap, but it's pretty.

Speaking of Flamecrabs, our four axedwarves (one was injured by a goblin prisoner and has been reassigned to the Royal Guard, a largely ceremonial duty, while she recuperates) have been training in the barracks and improving their skills at martial arts and axedwarfship.

Out of nowhere, an ambush just south of our front gate! However, just south of our front gate is also the location of the kennels where Lord Likot Anûznish has been training war dogs, and our marksdwarves are close by. This should be a short battle.

And that does it for the goblins. Four war dogs lost but no dwarven casualties.

Good thing we got that ambush out of the way early--the annual caravan from the Mountainhomes has arrived! We'll send the marksdwarves out right away as an escort, just in case there's another ambush lying in wait.

Sure enough, there's an ambush. Four goblin wrestlers and three goblin crossbowmen--one of them an elite sniper! This could be dangerous. Good thing our marksdwarves are already en route.

Well, the goblins are defeated, but the merchants have fled. Again. Will we ever get to trade with the merchants of our homelands again?

Baron Tun Olonmeng is feeling miserable at the moment. He seems incredibly upset, and perhaps rightly so, at still not having proper living quarters and office for a dwarf of his station. We'll get the miners and masons working on that right away.

Oh dear. The baron is running around babbling to himself. This is very very bad.

Well, let's hope he feels better eventually. Don't count on it though.

Meanwhile, the miners are digging out a large rectangular cavern above the main kitchens near the residential area to serve as a new farm. It'll need to be irrigated since it's currently bare rock, but it's close to our artificial river, and having the food supply near the food stockpile will mean much less time wasted hauling things all over the place.

Migrants!
• Mrs. Solon Limâroslan, woodcrafter and wife of Olin Ilralaran
...and her pet mule Zon Ngotûnmosus
• Mr. Olin Ilralaran, peasant and husband of Solon Limâroslan
...and his pet mule Solon Borushoddom (naming his mule after his wife?? Really now!)
• Ms. Meng Zonsosad, animal dissector
• Mr. Såkzul Ókmonom, woodcrafter and husband of Zasit Ducimstul
• Mrs. Zasit Ducimstul, peasant and wife of Såkzul Ókmonom
• Mr. Eshtân Nïngònul, wood burner
• Ms. Udib Geshudvabôk, potash maker
...and her kitten Edëm Atírenkos and donkey foal Dodók Oddomegdoth
• Ms. Tun Anedthob, woodworker (who forgot to bring an axe)

And the baron has just died of his melancholy. The baroness is understandably upset, but coping as well as can be expected. Sir Mafol the Hammerer organized a memorial service in the dining room. Mosus the gem cutter did the honor of putting the baron's body into his tomb.

Meanwhile, back on the old farm, we've stopped planting the fields so the farmers aren't spending all their time sowing and harvesting, and we can work on moving everything to the main residential area instead.

Winter 1060

Fikod the weaver has been possessed by unknown forces! He has claimed a clothier's shop, and grabbed two bolts of giant cave spider silk cloth.

Oddom the legendary weaponsmith ran into a goblin thief outside and tried to attack it, but was stabbed in the chest for his trouble and the thief escaped. He'll live (he is superdwarvenly tough from all his work at the forge) but he'll need to rest for quite a while before his lung recovers. Zulban the farmer has brought him in and placed him in an unused bed to rest.

Fikod has finished his project. It is Kel Gidur ("The Metal of Memories"), a pair of silk... braies?... which he explains is essentially a pair of lightweight knee-length trousers to be worn under one's normal trousers. Some sort of clothing popular with the humans, apparently. This "braies" is indeed very well made, dyed midnight blue, and adorned with hanging rings of silk. On the, um, front center there is an embroidered picture of the lobstershell mask that Èrith made last spring. Humans have strange taste in clothing indeed.

Tirist the peasant has given birth to another baby girl, Thîkut Óratír.

The new farm area is complete! It's a large rectangular room, big enough to fit four full-size farm plots, just above our main food storage area on the residential level. There's a large floodgate separating it from our artificial river, controlled by a lever--when the lever is pulled, the gate will open, flooding the room with water. A second lever will open floor hatches draining to the bottomless chasm, removing the water and leaving muddy floor suitable for farming.

In the meantime, our miners and engravers have carved out a lovely bedroom and dining room for the dowager baroness, complete with a masterwork bed and golden furniture. She is quite pleased. Likewise, the quarters for the hammerer and tax collector are carved out and properly detailed, and are only awaiting sufficient golden furniture to be manufactured. A rich vein of gold near the old farm site is providing plenty of gold at the moment.

The beverage crisis has been averted for now. Our brewers have made plenty of delicious wine from the strawberries, sunberries, and plump helmets grown at the old farm site over the last few seasons; we should have sufficient surplus to last us until the new farm starts production.
